When clearing app data is safe
Clearing the app's data, or uninstalling the app, deletes everything on the phone that has not been sent to the server. It also deletes every unfinished draft.
Before you ask a user to clear app data
- Ask the user to finish and save, or discard, any draft they want to keep. Drafts are lost even after a sync.
- Ask the user to tap the sync icon at the top of the Home screen and wait for the sync to finish.
- Once the sync has finished, everything the user saved is on the server. Clearing app data, uninstalling or reinstalling is now safe.
The number on the sync icon is a reminder to sync, not proof that nothing is waiting. A finished sync is the proof.
When not to do it
If the sync will not finish, do not clear app data. That is when records are lost. Escalate to the platform team with:
- a screenshot of the bottom of the More screen
- the error the user sees when syncing
- the app's logs: under More, tap Upload app info
